Tis So Very True...

You know that saying about the surest way to experience God's way of laughing at you is to make plans? Oh, yeah. Fell for it bigtime. Hook, line, and sinker. ::sigh::

So the plan was to spend the day doing laundry, vaccuuming, cleaning, etc. to get as many distractions out of the way as possible for the rest of the week. I go to bed last night really stoked about this NaNoWriMo and wake up ready to dig into the chores. I check the clock and climb out of bed (I would have sprung, but hey, I'm not as young as I used to be and with a herniated disk in my back, springing just doesn't happen anymore...). So far so good. I gather up some clean clothes and head into the bathroom. Still a-okay. Flip the light switch as soon as I'm through the door.

Yep, you guessed it. Nothing happens. Room stays completely and totally dark. Damn, figure the bulb blew on hubs or son but they didn't have time to change it or leave a note ('cause that's sure never ever happened before... ::rolls eyes::). Go back into the hall and flip that switch so I can see into the closet where lightbulbs are kept to retrieve a new one. Nada. Nothing. Zilch. Zip. Huh. Go back into bedroom. Clocks are lit and fan is running, but clock displays seem to be flickering slightly now and then. Double huh.

So I decide to go check the living room and kitchen/dining room, trying really, really hard not to think about the fact that it's Halloween and that some lady died in the apartment upstairs last year right before we moved in. Check the cable box display and find it dark (as in no clock), so no juice in the living room either. Head to dining room and find the ceiling fan off, so flip switch in case hubs or son turned it off. Still nothing. Damn, things are so not looking good here.

Step into the kitchen and flip the switch there. Crap. No power in the kitchen either. Which really, really sucks because I haven't had breakfast yet and with no power, I can't risk opening the fridge. Grab the phone and start to dial. Suddenly it occurs to me: it's a cordless--no power, no phone. ::sigh:: So after a bit of searching, I find my cell phone and flip it open. Damn, down to the last power bar. I dial the complex's manager to report the problem, vowing to keep it short. So what happens? Yep, got the answering machine.

Double crap. This obviously isn't a power company issue, as I still have power (flickering occasionally, but there nonetheless) in the bedrooms. It has to be internal. So I call my sister-in-law, who works for the management company to report it to them (they're the ones who do the maintenance and such anyway). Turns out that, yep, three other apartments are having the same issue. One of the others just had new phone service installed last week, on the same day the power cut out briefly while someone was drilling. I had assumed that they'd fixed what they hit since there was no further signs of trouble. (Well, not until over the weekend--at which point I also called the manager to report the lights flickering in the living/dining areas & got the answering machine.)

Anyway, electrician is dispatched to check things out. An hour or so later my sister-in-law calls back. Electrician says that a phone installer hit one of the electric wires while drilling, then tried to cover it up with silicone caulk. (Jerk!!) Management company calls Ameritech, who of course says that no report was filed and insist it wasn't their guy's fault. SIL calls me back and asks if I can take my digital camera out to get some pictures of it so they have some evidence.

Okay, by now it's well after noon. I haven't had breakfast because I can't open the fridge and I haven't had a shower because I can't dry my hair (power was out in bedroom by this point as well). So I go out to see about getting the pictures. Electrician is getting into truck and pulling away as I get out there. After yet more phone calls between SIL & electrician (during which my phone was chirping like a madman at me due to low battery), she informs me that he'll be back in about 20 minutes; he needed to get some supplies. ::sigh:: So now I'm not only stinky (no shower) and hungry (no power), I have very little phone time left and I'm becoming more and more pissed at the Ameritech idiot. So I go back around the front of the building (damage was in the rear, of course), go inside and grab my wallet, having decided to walk across O'Reilly's Auto Parts' parking lot to Wing's 'N Things (that first apostrophe isn't a typo, that's how their sign reads) for some lunch. I feel too grubby and stinky to eat there, so order a burger combo to go. I get back the apartment and find there is power in the bedroom again (electrician is still MIA, tho) and it doesn't seem to be flickering anymore, so I plug my phone in to charge and boot up hubby's desktop planning (you'd think I'd have learned with the planning stuff by now, wouldn't you??) to check email while I eat. I no sooner get logged into Yahell than ::plink:: is heard and power winks out again. ::headdesk::

So in addition to no shower, no breakfast, no chores, no laundry, no vaccuuming, there is still very little phone time and no surfing or email either. I eat the burger, but end up tossing the fries. By now, the electrician is back and I go out to see about the pics as management co requested. He doesn't seem to have any clue what I'm talking about, but agrees to take my camera up the ladder and snap a few pictures. He then says that the angle isn't very good, but that we should be able to get a better photo after he takes it down. Okay, no problem. He goes on getting the new wire ready to install and is soon ready. This is good, right?

Well, no. Seems he has to wait for the IP (Illinois Power) guy to show up. Wonderful. More waiting. And waiting. And waiting. And waiting. Finally, over an hour later, IP guy arrives. Takes several more hours to get everything in place and connected back up. FINALLY, around 4:30 we have power again--woohoo!! I go back out and get the last photo to send the management co.

So after rushing through the dishes and throwing together some soup/sandwich stuff for dinner, I've decided that God has had enough amusement at my expense for one day and that the chores will wait until December or someone else does them, whichever comes first. (Personally, I'm putting my money on it being December--tho hubs will probably pitch in and at least help with the laundry; he's really great about doing that kind of stuff!)

Now I'm going to go read my email and find some nice, whumpy fanfic to soothe myself before I start writing my novel in just under four hours. ::grins::
